At the Institute for Open Space Planning and Design, people are at the center of consideration in planning and design activities at all scales. Research questions are broad and applied in the sense of a livable, high-quality designed environment in the city and countryside. Natural scientific, artistic and design-oriented as well as social and political science approaches to the topics are used in the analysis of open spaces as well as the debate about their further development.

Grüne Ringe, Netze und Achsen sind wichtige Instrumente für den Schutz, die Entwicklung und Formung urbaner Kulturlandschaften. Neben dem mittlerweile breiten Repertoire, diese Landschaft neu in Wert zu setzen, sind mit einer Fokussierung des Blicks auf bestimmte Formen jedoch auch Probleme verbunden. Freiraumschutz findet dann nicht mehr auf 100% der Fläche statt. "Grüne-Form-Projekte" zeichnen sich zudem durch einen speziellen planungskommunikativen Ansatz aus. Aus der Analyse deutscher Beispiele heraus wird eine neue stadtregionale Freiraumtypologie zur Diskussion gestellt.
